Kooyong have had great success at the recent 18/U and 16/U Australian Championships held in Launceston, Tasmania.

Luca Connaughton had an amazing week in Tasmania, winning the 18/U boys’ singles title. The telling match came in the quarterfinals where Connaughton was down a set and 5-1 on the brink of exiting the Championships but managed to make an incredible come back to win the match in three sets. From here he was dominant, including winning the final 6-1, 6-1. “Winning the 18s Nationals is a great honour, thank you to the support of Kooyong, I wear the badge with pride. Thanks to my parents, fitness trainer and early coaches and my current coach Chris Madsen who believed in me, challenged me, and worked me hard since I was 10 years old” Connaughton said after the win.

Gabby Villegas, partnering with Alicia Dale took out the doubles title in fine form without dropping a set. Villegas also had a strong showing in the singles event making the quarter finals. Baxter Errey and Tom Ranson paired up for a historic run to take out the boys’ doubles title. Ranson and Errey were runners up a year ago in the boys’ doubles event and was sweet to go one better this year “We came close last year, we know we play well together, have spent the year playing pennant together and training regularly together so know each other’s games very well. Was very satisfying to get the win and become National doubles champions” said Ranson.

In the 16/U Australian Championships, it was Lachie King who shone through to capture the National title. Winning both his quarter finals match and semi-final match in tight three setters, King was dominant in the final winning 6-1, 6-4. “It’s been a great few weeks in Tassie, making the quarter finals of the 18s event and now winning the 16s title, I feel really happy all the hard work has paid off.” Said King.
King
as a result of the win receives a wildcard into the Australian Open juniors’ event as reward.

Congratulations to all our winners and the Kooyong Foundation players who competed.
